President's Dinner Reception at the Istana

The President of the Republic of Singapore, his Excellency Tony Tan Keng Yam had hosted a special dinner reception at the Istana for the Team Singapore Athlete on 7 February 2012.

This special dinner reception is in appreciation of all the efforts Team Singapore had put in and competed in the 3 major multi-sports Games in 2011 – XIII Special Olympics World Summer Games Athens (25 Jun – 4 Jul), 26th SEA Games Indonesia, Jakarta - Palembang (11 - 22 Nov) and 6th ASEAN Para Games Solo (12 -22 Dec).

An estimated 320 representatives, officials and athletes from the SSC, Singapore National Olympic Council, Singapore National Paralympic Council, and various National Sports Associations attended the event. Various other personnel graced the event including Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean, Coordinating Minister for National Security, Minister for Home Affairs and President, Singapore National Olympic Council. Mr. Chan Chun Sing, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports, Minister of State, Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts, as well as Mdm. Halimah Yacob, Minister of State for Community Development, Youth and Sports, were also present at this event. SKF were represented by our President Shihan Peter Chong, 26th SEA Games Team Coach; Shihan David Thong and 26th SEA Games Bronze Medalist; Mr Tay Qinyuan.

With the many dignitaries and his Excellency, the night seemed magnificent and somewhat surreal. It was certainly an humbling and rewarding experience for those being invited to this dinner. It is also significant that his Excellency took a personal interest and take this initiative to engage the sport community in Singapore in such a personal way.

SKF MC want to take this opportunity to congratulate Qinyuan again for doing us proud and thank all our sporting partners including parents and athletes for the trust and support they have showered upon us. Without your support, our successes are simply not possible! THANK YOU!

Bronze SEA Games 2011

Singapore participated in the 26th SEA Games in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Team Coach: Shihan David Thong

Singapore Referee: Shihan Richard Ng

Tay Qinyuan participated in the Men's below 55kg individual kumite and won a Bronze medal.

It was a daunting task for Qinyuan who dropped two weight categories from his initial below 67kg individual kumite to compete in this category. Against all odds, he managed to deliver and do Singapore proud.

We are proud of the 100% return as SNOC only selected one athletes out of the 6 we had nominated. We congratulate Qinyuan for a job well done as he consistently performed and delivered since his debut 25th SEA Games.

SKF would like to take this opportunity to thank SSC, SNOC, our affiliates and friends who have been supporting this management effort and direction in charting the sport to a new height. As what Qinyuan rightly said “ The Singapore Spirit means working together intelligently as a team. It enables us to create our presence in the world as a shining little red dot” We THANK YOU ALL!

We will continue to work hard and help keep the Singapore spirit GOING! Osh!.

On the 5th till 7th of November 2011, our national team participated in Let's Play Non-stop in Paris-Ris SRC which was organized by the Singapore Sports Council. Our national team had the opportunity to conduct public demonstrations of kata, kumite and self defense techniques.

The three day long programme gave our athletes the chance to showcase their talents and engage the public by teaching them a few karate basics and self defense techniques.

SKF would like to thank the Singapore Sports Council for giving the national team an eye opening opportunity and a great experience in being able to share our passion for karate.

Singapore Karate-do Federation is aiming to achieve good performance with more committed athletes nominated in the coming South East Asian Games (SEA Games) to be held in Indonesia.

In year 2009 SEA Games held in Laos, SKF sent 3 athletes with a return of 1 Silver and 1 Bronze. Its the best result since year 2003. Now that the federation had its multi year sports planning firmly in place, SKF is looking forward to good performance from the selected athletes.
